Welcoming Your New Family Member
Complete guide covering pre-adoption evaluation, preparation checklist, and pet care responsibilities to help you prepare fully
Pre-Adoption Evaluation
Adopting a pet is a major long-term commitment. Before deciding to adopt, carefully evaluate the following to ensure you're ready to be a responsible pet owner.
Family Consensus
Pet ownership involves the whole family. Communicate with all family members beforehand to ensure everyone agrees and is willing to share pet care responsibilities. Confirm no family members have pet allergies.
Time & Companionship
Pets need daily time for companionship, feeding, cleaning, and exercise. Beyond basic care, emotional interaction is crucial. Ensure you have sufficient time to care for your pet throughout its life.
Financial Capacity
Pet ownership requires ongoing expenses including food, supplies, vaccinations, health checkups, and medical costs. Medical expenses may increase as pets age. Ensure you have adequate budget.
Living Environment
Confirm your living environment is suitable for pets, including adequate space, permission to keep pets (landlord approval if renting), and environmental safety.
Lifelong Commitment
Pets can live over a decade. Adoption means committing to care for them their entire life, through health and illness, never abandoning them.

Provide Proper Care
Must provide appropriate, adequate, clean food and water, safe, clean, ventilated living environment, and timely adequate outdoor activity time.
Medical Care & Spay/Neuter
Regular vaccinations, health checkups, and prompt medical treatment when sick. Must spay/neuter dogs/cats by law (unless registered with breeding management plan) to prevent overpopulation.
Pet Registration
Dogs/cats must be registered within 4 months of birth, microchipped, and registered with authorities. Update registration information when changed to avoid fines.
No Abuse or Abandonment
Any abuse or harm to animals is prohibited. Under Article 5(3) of Taiwan's Animal Protection Act, owners may not abandon animals; violations carry an administrative fine of NT$30,000-150,000. Intentionally injuring an animal causing serious injury or death is a criminal offence (up to 2 years imprisonment).
Management & Control
Properly restrain pets when outside, prevent wandering or attacking others. Cannot tow pets with vehicles or leave pets alone in enclosed spaces.
Lifelong Care
Adoption means committing to care for pets their entire life through all circumstances. If unable to continue care, must find suitable new owners, not abandon.
